Trends in Portland Metro Homeownership Affordability

Homeownership Rates

Homeownership is the single largest asset most households have and a key strategy for household wealth building. This map shows the percentage of households that own their homes over time—from 1990 to a trend-line projection through 2020. Unless trends change, homeownership rates will decrease across much of the region, especially in neighborhoods closer to the city center.

The darkest areas have the highest homeownership rates.

Assumptions:

Data on tenure was gathered from the 1990 and 2000 Decennial Census and 2009-2015 5-year American Community Survey for the Three-County Area.
